Seals. Tags. Explosive tags, to be precise. The right markings and infusion of chakra can make a simple piece of paper very dangerous.
[Certain types of paper are preferable, but they could make do with what they had. He'd never made an explosive tag from lined paper before. it might be a new experience.]
[She had the sudden realisation that only a few weeks ago, she would have laughed all this off as nonsense and gone with something far more high tech. Now? It doesn't get too much more than a confused stare and a quirk of the head.]
I'm afraid I don't understand what seals or tags are, but I'll take your word for it. I... didn't bring paper, though. [Pause as she thinks about it.] Actually, I've only seen paper a couple of times in my life.
[It might be that a world as technologically advanced as the one she comes from doesn't need paper anymore, but it's still a strange thing to think about. Paper is still used by everyone in his world. It's a necessity. Hell, one of the members of Akatsuki used paper as the base for most of her techniques.]
[Sasuke has to pause at that, because the truth is he hasn't seen much paper for writing on at all. Paper bags, paper wrapped around cans and other food items, but not for writing on. Though truthfully he hadn't been looking very hard for them.]
... I don't think so.
But that doesn't mean they don't exist.
[He might be able to use a food wrapper if he really needs to.]
[In this regard, Tali is utterly useless - it's not something she's even considered being on the ship up to now. All she can do is cant her head thoughtfully and ask the immediate question:]
Is there anything you could use as a substitute? There's got to be something else you can mark... Or do you definitely need paper?
I haven't tried it on anything but paper. That doesn't mean it won't necessarily work on something else, though.
[After all, a summoning technique could work on any surface. It's a whole different sort of jutsu than this, but that doesn't mean some of the same ideas can't apply.]
We'll work under the assumption that I can't use them right now and try different methods.
Sure. But it'd be interesting to see if it could work on something else at some point. Maybe even something electronic - a datapad, or a holographic interface...
[Or they could focus on the matter at hand, how's that sound.]
Anyway. Actually, I was wondering if we want to kill whatever it is right away or if we definitely need to capture it alive. That'd make a difference to the kind of trap we put together.
[When half your life is killing people in gunfights and thinking nothing of it, it's a valid question.]
I would aim to kill it. You can still study a dead body.
[He frowns.]
But you do have a point. Someone might want to keep at least one alive.
[Scientist types were like that. He lived with one long enough. ...And there were always those who just didn't want to kill anything. But if they were a threat that aimed to kill recruits then they should treat them as such.]
Yeah. I wasn't going to suggest we only stick with one type anyway. We'll have to vary it up depending on the location.
[If they had the time, equipment, and permission, they might be able to set up some nice traps in the air ducts - assuming they were being used.]
I would suggest poisons, but that's not good in confined spaces like this ship has. It would have to be more controlled than we might be able to manage.
I don't think I'd trust using poisons on a ship - I don't know anything about poisons, though, so it's mostly that I'd have no idea what I'm doing...
[The final words trail off questioningly, looking at Sasuke in a way that asks if he knows any more than she does.]
Other than that, since we don't even know what size we're dealing with... tripwire's a good idea, that's easy enough and it works in confined spaces. A snare would work on something smaller, too.
[There is a slight pause there as Tali parses this. And then:] Oh. [The penny drops - she'll find time later to be embarrassed about this whole past... minute or so.] Right. I see.
[And then, hurriedly, gesturing at the scattering of metal and bits and pieces around them:] Let's just see what we can do with this to start with, then.

I'll have to see if I can't work around that.

[She fiddles around with some of the wire in her hands, coiling it between her fingers without even really realising she's doing it.]
Have you ever seen any on board here?

[If it, they, whatever are killing people on board, she doesn't have much sympathy to spare.]
We can make a mixture of different types, I suppose. It'll be more effective if we've got a variety.

[Due to allowing himself to be experimented on, but he probably shouldn't get into that.]
Tripwires and snares are definitely something I have a lot of experience with. I can show you the basics.

[Her brain catches up to one of the last things Sasuke said with a just visible start.]
You're immune to poison?
[She stares at him quizzically, completely unaware of any awkward situation she might be about to cause.]
no subject
[He stares back, not willing to go into more detail.]
It's not a normal thing for people in my world. It's just something I worked to develop over time.
[That should be enough.]

[He's no expert at building things from scrap, though she might be able to do something with it.
He goes for the wire, setting it aside.]
Screws, hooks, tape. Separate those. They might be needed.
